As for WoW, I imagine it's casual friendly to the casual demographic who just want to get something done in 20 minutes rather than those focusing on endgame raiding. Convenience has its places, but not every place. Particularly when they aren't especially rewards-driven. The trick is figuring out which things that take time, are wastes of time. And somehow remember that ride 5 years later. To others, it could be a memorable experience where they get to talk to others, maybe learned a bit about them and maybe made a friend. To some, riding on a boat or airship for 10 minutes just to get to a destination sounds like a waste of time when it could just be instant travel. It's a fine line, what constitutes a pointless timesink versus what creates immersion. My point though wasn't a matter of how much time people are willing to spend, it's what they're willing to spend their time on. What is inconvenient isn't always adventure, that's for sure, sometimes it's there just to keep you on the treadmill. If a game has nothing to engage them with then your population tanks and then everyone is whining about that. There are so many systems and mechanics that unless you are able to put in a ton of hours every week you are so far behind you don't feel vested.Īnd while yes hardcore players have a point that sometimes devs go too far in one direction the majority of players are casual. WoW is a great example, people always like to say that it is totally casual friendly and that is a bunch of BS. Where the problem starts is excessive mechanics, where yes you can do something in 30-60mins but bc there are so many mechanics that effort is diffused to almost nothing. There is no reason that a game can't have some content that can be done in 30mins and have other content that can take hours. What I don't have the patience or time for are time sinks that are cover-ups for poor/lack of dev or game content. I still have very fond memories of raiding the planes in EQ. I don't personally know anyone that thinks that an end-game raid needs to be done in 60 mins or less. and then the time to actually attempt and complete the "adventure"). It's one thing if a raid or dungeon requires a certain amount of time (prep time for mechanics, gear, consumables, etc. Most of my friends if not all of them have no issues with time investments. You are conflating a number of separate issues.
